About Expedition

Mt. Cho-OYU Expedition

Mount Cho-Oyu, standing at 8,201 meters (26,906 feet), is the sixth-highest peak in the world. Located 20 km west of Mount Everest, it lies on the border between Tibet (China) and Nepal. Cho-Oyu is known as one of the most accessible 8,000-meter peaks in the Himalayas, due to its relatively straightforward climbing route and lack of significant technical challenges. The mountain is revered in Tibetan culture and is often called the "Turquoise God," a name that reflects its beautiful blue hue seen from a distance.

Most expeditions to Cho-Oyu are launched from the Tibetan side, where the climbing route is more manageable compared to Nepal, where organizing an expedition can be more difficult. Pioneer Adventure offers highly trained and experienced climbing Sherpas for your Cho-Oyu expedition. Sherpas are invaluable for their expertise and assistance throughout the climb, ensuring the journey is safer and more successful. Past expeditions with our Sherpa guides have seen a high success rate, making their inclusion highly recommended for anyone looking to summit Cho-Oyu.

The expedition begins upon arrival in Lhasa, Tibet, where we handle all the necessary official procedures and offer sightseeing opportunities during your two-day stay. From Lhasa, we’ll drive you in a Toyota Land Cruiser or comfortable mini-bus to Shigatse, Shegar, and eventually the Chinese Base Camp. After settling in at Base Camp, you'll trek to the Advance Base Camp (ABC) and continue the climb through several camps before reaching the summit. Afterward, we’ll descend back through the camps and return to Base Camp, followed by a drive to Tingri and Nyalam, and finally to Kathmandu. The ideal times for a Cho-Oyu expedition are from late May to early June and from late September to early October.
