About Expedition

Mount Gasherbrum I (8,080m) is the world’s 11th highest peak though it is ‘least popular’ on the ascent-list for the 8000-meter peaks. It is located at the China–Pakistan border in Gilgit-Baltistan region. Gasherbrum literally means ‘Shining Wall’. Mount Gasherbrum is also called ‘Hidden Peak’ by the 19th-century British explorer- William Martin Conway in reference to its extreme remoteness. Out of six Gasherbrum Peaks, Gasherbrum-I peak is the highest among them. A climber experiences challenging technical difficulties at a lower level of ascent. The first part of the ascent is steep, full of snow and ice with rocks then the ascent slowly gets easy on snow and mixed slops. The normal route to climb Mount Gasherbrum I is made through ‘The Japanese Couloir’ located on top of the northwest face. The climb is in Alpine Style.

The first successful summit on Mount Gasherbrum I was made on July 5, 1958, by an eight-man American Expedition Team led by Mr. Nick Clinch when his two fellow climbers named Pete Schoening and Andy Kauffman reached the summit for the first time. The ascent was made to the summit at that time via the long south-east ridge. Only experienced mountaineers can attempt this mountain.
